Happy Friday, Everyone! For this edition of New Retro Weekender, I apologize in advance for the Huey Lewis and the News puns that may follow… But first I’ll start by saying that my brother and his friends LOVE non-mainstream music. And they know a lot about obscure music. Which is why I was a bit surprised when he told me they had spent the better part of an evening singing along to a Huey Lewis and the News album. “Was it Sports?” I asked. “Of course,” he answered.

The Art of Sonnenzimmer
I’ve spent the past week enjoying film at the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. While I didn’t have nearly as much time off work as I have in years past, I still managed to head to some great movies, as well as the Flatstock gig poster show, which is held each year during the festival. Today we spotlight the work of Sonnenzimmer, the artistic team of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi. One of the main reasons we love their work: it looked like nothing else at Flatstock.
’80s-Style Bathrooms!
Today we visit a few homes that haven’t been renovated in at least two decades. And unlike the folks at Ugly House Photos, we think the featured bathrooms in today’s post are pretty freakin’ awesome. Who needs granite countertops and dark wooden cabinets when you have patterned tile and bathtubs in any color but white? Thank goodness the fine folks who owned these homes left them alone, because now we have a pure glimpse into our favorite decade and the powder rooms that decorated it.
Glamorous ’80s Glass Finds
There’s nothing like a little ’80s sparkle. Whether it comes from crystal, rhinestones or ice, there’s something wonderfully reflective about geometric finds that shine! Today’s material of choice is glass. And we can’t get enough of it. Which is why we can’t help but feature 5 unforgettable glass finds from the 1980s. Above we see Big 1980s Retro Glass Earrings from Etsy shop Original Vintage Classics. The best part: this jewelry is hand painted in gold leaf!
’80s-Style Men’s Shirts from Topman
While shopping this weekend, I came across an assortment of ’80s-style shirts for men. As it turns out, Topman has been heavily influenced by 1980s colors, patterns and cuts in the creation of their new collection. Today we celebrate the fun of flamboyant design, as well as the joy of the slightly over-sized fit. As Topman claims, “Our new 80’s inspired fit with wider, dropped shoulders and fuller sleeves is designed to create an oversized streetwear silhouette.” And with sizes ranging from XXS-XXL, there’s definitely a perfect fit for everyone!
’80s New Year Decor
Why is party decor so inherently ’80s?! We’ve explored this phenomenon in the realm of Halloween decorations, and now we’re on the cusp of the new year, once again blown away by the 1980s flair that oozes from mainstream party supply retailers. What’s at the root of this glittery revival?! The flash, the eye-catching aspect of festive occasions, a nostalgia that has entered the minds of product designers? Or perhaps ’80s design mimicked party pizzazz back in the day. Whatever the inspiration, how can you not love the results? Especially when everything is so darn affordable…
An ’80s Christmas Luncheon
You know those crazy ’80s parties steeped in nostalgia? Where everybody dresses up, drinks sunset-colored martinis and goes home with a Rubik’s cube or an arm full of plastic jewelry? We’ve hosted one of those! Today’s featured ’80s-themed gathering is a little different… I recently threw an ’80s Christmas luncheon for family to ring in the holidays. The focus: ’80s glamour and decadent food! In fact, in the 1980s, food was displayed in a “big” way! At the finest restaurants, each plate was a canvas that used tools such as ground pepper, chives, nuts and other “garnishes” to make a culinary statement. Read on for more ’80s foodie fun…
