Happy Friday, Everyone! For this edition of New Retro Weekender, I apologize in advance for the Huey Lewis and the News puns that may follow… But first I’ll start by saying that my brother and his friends LOVE non-mainstream music. And they know a lot about obscure music. Which is why I was a bit surprised when he told me they had spent the better part of an evening singing along to a Huey Lewis and the News album. “Was it Sports?” I asked. “Of course,” he answered.
And then came this week… In case you haven’t been paying attention, Huey Lewis is ALL OVER THE NEWS. As it turns out, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the album Sports. Huey Lewis and the News are planning a new tour beginning this May. This week they were on Dancing with the Stars. And Huey even made a parody of American Psycho with Weird Al for Funny or Die.
That got me thinking about how much I loved Huey Lewis and the News when I was a kid. Sports came out when I was 7, and somehow I’d convinced my Mom to get a cable package that included MTV. At the top of the montage above, we see a screen shot from the video for “Heart and Soul,” my favorite Huey Lewis and the News track.
Remember, folks, these were the very early days of MTV. And some musicians relished their new roles as actors. These were the musicians who were the stars of MTV. Nothing topped the antics of Huey Lewis and the News–their videos, like the one above, were filled with comedy. While re-watching the vid for “Heart and Soul,” I was reminded of the ’80s-fabulous fashion of actress Signy Coleman (shown in the montage above), who played the female lead in this piece.
Which reminded me of my weekend to-do list…
1. Shop for ’80s fashion on Etsy. I got a gift card from Etsy over Christmas. Is it sad that I’ve been too busy to use it? Things are changing this weekend! Here are a few tempting finds: Plastic Bangles from Etsy shop Found in the Ground, shown in the middle row above. And we can’t forget this vintage Avon bracelet, necklace and earrings set from 4 Dolls in Time, shown at the bottom right of the montage.
2. Finalize the centerpiece for Mirror80’s next Retro Foodie event! We know… We’ve been talking about this junk food fest for awhile. The photo shoot is early next week. Any ideas for a Memphis-Milano centerpiece? We think it easily could have involved the pyramid vase from Etsy shop Amy’s Vintage Decorium, shown at the top of the montage above. Too bad we didn’t order it in time!
3. Do something as fun and festive as ’80s neon lighting. Not kidding, folks. It’s been a crazy week filled with some difficult news, long hours, and an exhausting trip to the vet with Kitty. Kind of needing to unwind as soon as possible! By the way, the neon lighting pic in the montage at the top of the post comes from Scoop Web.
Have a fluorescent weekend…
