Tomorrow is the first day of July! So let’s take a look back at a few of our favorite posts from June, since this month was all about bringing retro-modern style home. We continue to be inspired by the current still life and pattern revivals, which celebrate elements of the past in a modern way. Plus, over the last few weeks we were busy with plenty of original features and projects. From a post that shines the spotlight on one of our favorite design studios and webshops to an original DIY project celebrating the New Memphis movement, here are some highlights from the past month…

Still Life Style: Color Blocking
In today’s edition of Still Life Style, we take a look at what’s going on behind the action. More often than not, still life backgrounds seem to involve some sort of color blocking, like the image above from Wessel Baarda. We’ve definitely seen a lot of this diagonal/geo color blocking in home decor and DIY projects as well. If you’re interested in how to celebrate color blocking in the realm of interior design, check out this recent post I wrote for Decoist. For this post, however, we’re keeping our feet firmly planted in still life territory. Let’s take a look at some vibrant photographs, shall we?…
Mirror80 April Favorites
April was a great month at Mirror80, and I loved that there was a balance between authentic ’80s design and modern style with a retro twist. If you’re new to Mirror80, I’ll start by saying welcome! At the beginning of each new month, I publish a post that reflects on the month gone by.
1980s Interior Design Trend: Borders
Today’s post is dedicated to the painted border. Yes, I’m talking about borders, which have been in “outdated” territory for years, thanks to a variety of country-themed designs involving ducks and floral motifs. But I’m here to say that the border is back! Especially since interior styling photos from the 1980s reveal that there WAS such a thing as a tasteful modern border, especially when paint was used to create a simple, striking design…
’80s Design Spotlight: Three Men and a Baby
Today we’re taking a “tour” of the retro-fabulous apartment featured in the 1987 hit film Three Men and a Baby. Somehow this one dwelling manages to pack in a multitude of 1980s interior design styles, as the rooms showcase everything from Memphis-Milano finds and neon arcade decor to glass block and eclectic architectural pieces.
The Work of Camille Walala
If you’re a fan of the New Memphis movement, you’re likely already an admirer of Camille Walala. The work of this London-based artist has graced many realms, from mural art and interior design to art direction and textile prints. I’ve fallen in love with her colorful creations for Darkroom, but there’s much more to this designer than prints and patterns. Walala’s influences include the Memphis Movement, the Ndebele tribe and artist Victor Vasarely. There is indeed something Memphis-meets-tribal-meets Op Art about the work of Camille Walala. Read on for a glimpse into her world…
Pretty in Pink
Today’s post is dedicated to the 1986 film Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy. While John Hughes wrote the screenplay, the movie’s director was Howard Deutch (who also directed Some Kind of Wonderful). What’s not to love about Pretty in Pink?! The fashion, the soundtrack, the set design. A-MAZING. Shall we take a closer look?…
