Happy Friday, Everyone! Many of you have written in and shared your design ideas with me, and one thing’s for sure: Mirror80 readers love being creative. From interior design endeavors to art and writing projects, your ideas have truly inspired me. Today I thought I’d post about inspiration… What inspires you?!
The Ceramic Art of Alison Brent
Today we celebrate the work of talented ceramic artist Alison Brent, who began creating marble-motif masterpieces well before marble became trendy again. Furniture knobs, t-lights, coasters and table lamps are a few of the artist’s many offerings. Our favorite part: the way sleek marble finishes combine with candy colors such as hot pink, bright yellow and mint green. Read on for more fabulous finds…
’80s Party Supplies
Feeling festive today? I am! I decided to stage an impromptu photo shoot using my growing stash of party supplies. You may recognize them from previous Retro Foodie photo shoots. Sprinkles, confetti, washi tape, swizzle sticks and more… I’ve grouped them into party concepts that would be fun for any retro-style fête. Now time to celebrate!
An ’80s DIY Project: Marble Tile Art
Remember our ‘80s-style gift wrap tutorial? Today we take one of our favorite ingredients—marble-pattern contact paper–and use it to embellish a series of tiles for a geometric statement with retro style! Our inspiration: bank and hotel lobbies of the 1980s , as well as solid marble platters from Stone Theatre, which are a part of […]
Happy Holidays
Are you a fan of ’80s art? Perhaps you’ll love this 1980s-style holiday card as much I do… Created by artist and graphic designer Taylor Hillestad, this artistic greeting showcases the Deco design and clean lines of our favorite decade. When Taylor sent the card my way, I knew I wanted to share it with Mirror80 readers just in time for Christmas! Taylor’s inspiration: ’80s landscape art, Deco style and the use of gradients.
The Art of Landry McMeans
While at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar in Austin, Texas this past weekend, I came across the artwork of Landry McMeans. It was love at first sight! Maybe it’s the 3-D effect created by cardboard relief. Or perhaps it’s the prevalence of gradients, mini blind motifs and Southwestern landscapes. Calling it ’80s-style art would be oversimplifying the diversity of each piece. Yet for those who love retro style, there are definite themes that you will recognize from years gone by.
’80s DIY: A Paper Strip Art Project
Hi Everyone! I’ve been excited to share this ’80s-style paper strip DIY project with you for awhile now…but first I had to finish it! Like many worthwhile projects, this one had many phases, and the best developments occurred when I hit some major roadblocks. But I’m finally done with the wall art, and now that the kinks are ironed out, I have a pretty easy set of steps for you to follow if you want to try creating one of your own. Read on for the details. If you’re a talker, the text will provide a detailed explanation. If you’re more of a visual learner, the pictures should be a big help…
So Sottsass!
I have artist Dominic Joyce to thank for this post! Last week he brought today’s featured installation to my attention… London decor retailer Darkroom is currently honoring the work of Memphis-Milano designer Ettore Sottsass with an in-store tribute featuring a limited edition collection. The participants include the likes of Studiopepe, Jamie Julien-Brown, Stone Theatre and more. Titled “So Sottsass,” the installation includes upscale items such as marble trays, totem lights and hand painted ceramics, along with more affordable offerings such as wrapping paper. Check out the delicious finds below…
The Art of Georgiana Paraschiv
I’ve fallen head over heels in love with the artwork of Georgiana Paraschiv!!! Today we feature her amazing prints, available for purchase through her Society6 shop. From abstract lines and grids to marbleized color scapes, the hues and forms of her work are the perfect counterpart to 1980s decor.
’70s Interior Design Spotlight: Foul Play Starring Goldie Hawn
Anyone seen the movie Foul Play starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase? Released in 1978, the film was written and directed by Colin Higgins. I couldn’t resist posting the IMDB plot summary: “A shy San Francisco librarian and a bumbling cop fall in love as they solve a crime involving albinos, dwarves, and the Catholic Church.” You know, you just have to see this zany pic to get the full effect! Today we spotlight the movie’s ’70s-fabulous interior design, which includes a few trends that continued to shine throughout the ’80s, such as curved shelving and slanted wooden paneling.
