Anyone watching the Oscars this Sunday? I’m a bit of a film enthusiast… I never miss a South by Southwest Film Festival, and I totally nerded out in high school and college while studying film by watching movies during my free time and taking notes. I love the Academy Awards, especially since it combines film with a chance to entertain–one of my other passions. So it makes sense that over the course of Mirror80’s history, I’ve put together a few photo shoots for party concepts that can double as Oscar night fetes. Today we look back at the top 3. Enjoy!
Beautiful Colors: The Posters of Duran Duran
What’s your favorite Duran Duran song? The track that was the game-changer… You heard it once and knew you were hooked! For me it was “Rio.” For Duran Duran archivist Andrew Golub, it was “The Reflex”. One listen, and he was a devoted fan. In fact, Andrew, known as Durandy, has been collecting paper-based Duran Duran ephemera for more than 2o years. He’s amassed the largest Duran Duran archive in the world, which includes over 1,500 posters, more than 10,000 pages of magazine articles, 150 books, and memorabilia such as a board game, a briefcase and a zippered purse. Ready to see the collection? Now you can, thanks to Golub’s recent publication, a coffee table book titled Beautiful Colors: The Posters of Duran Duran.

Happy Wednesday, Everyone! Have I mentioned that I’m slowly giving my bedroom an ’80s makeover? ’80s Music Video Land: “Promised You a Miracle” by Simple Minds
Something happened last month–I found the Vevo channel through my Roku. Yes, I’m a little late in the game here, but the thought of being able to watch music videos on demand on my TV has led to many hours of dancing around my living room as a form of exercise and pure recreation. This channel has brought back the magic of watching MTV as a kid–you know, back when they played videos all day. Guess what video popped up during my first viewing binge? Today’s featured piece: “Promised You a Miracle” by Simple Minds. How had I never seen this video before?! Maybe because this 1982 track predated the band’s more commercial hits that emerged mid-decade. The video is filled with amazing style elements. In fact, it could inspire the design of a room.

Furniture knobs, t-lights, coasters and table lamps are a few of the artist’s many offerings. Our favorite part: the way sleek marble finishes combine with candy colors such as hot pink, bright yellow and mint green. Read on for more fabulous finds…
