Geo style, pastels, marble…all of these current trends have close ties to the 1980s. And this week, a variety of sites and blogs featured them in spades. First up: The New York Times. On Wednesday, I came across this article, titled “Furnishings With Geometric Patterns.” The article’s featured designer is Rafael de Cárdenas from Architecture at Large. I’m a long-time admirer!
Fun with Aquarium Plants
A few years ago, I was at an art show featuring modern works that incorporated artificial plants. In very radiant colors! The look was ultra contemporary, as the plastic blooms were affixed to canvases in very unusual ways. It was then that I immediately remembered the days of admiring and shopping for aquarium plants back when I had a tank of my own…and I realized that I didn’t need an aquarium to find a place for these vibrant accents in my home. More good news? Aquarium plants work well in modern interiors with an ’80s twist!
Mirror80 April Highlights
Hi Everyone! April was a busy month for us here at Mirror80. We spent a week reveling in a marble-infused style we like to call “Lobby Chic,” we began planning our next Retro Foodie photo shoot, and I (Kate) was featured in a Designer Profile that highlighted the style and mission of Mirror80. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!…
’80s Family Photos
Were you a kid in the ’80s? Or perhaps you grew up at a later time but love the fashion from the Decade of Decadence… Either way, you’ll really love today’s featured pics. Let’s just say they’re fabulous precisely because they are so sincere. I look back at some of my most awkward childhood family photos, and none of them combined a high level of staging with the best trends of the 1980s quite like the pics that follow. And speaking of Awkward Family Photos, nearly all of today’s featured images come from this popular site!

Enjoy the vivid hues and forms that follow, and be sure the check out the links for more details…
Welcome to the Jungle: ’80s Summer Party Inspiration
Hi Everyone! I’m looking ahead to our next Retro Foodie event–a tropical party with jungle-style undertones. The menu is still in the works, but rest assured there will be spicy fish with citrusy accents, lots of fresh fruit, popsicles for dunking in the cocktails, and of course, those little drink umbrellas…
On Creativity…
Hello, creative Mirror80 readers! Many of you have gotten in touch with me and shared your projects, ideas and endeavors. Interior design, visual art, music, writing and animation are a few of the many areas that your talents represent, and it’s been so wonderful to be a part of a creative community where modern style meets an appreciation for all things retro.
Shopping Retro on Etsy
Hi Everyone! Today I thought I’d share a collection of items that represent just the type of merchandise I love hunting down on Etsy. In fact, Etsy features some pretty phenomenal shops that focus on the Recent Retro (the late ’70s through the ’90s), and even more shops that focus on a wider range of items but consistently have great ’80s finds. Some of them even include beautiful photos that are especially enticing…
A Geo Montage Inspired by Brian Halsey
Hanging on the wall behind my dining room table are two 1980s serigraphs by artist Brian Halsey. They were a gift from my dear friend Jeff, originally on display in his father’s office during the ’80s. You can see glimpses of one Halsey serigraph at the top of this post. My new obsession: Halsey serigraphs in electric blue. In fact, they inspired today’s montage, featuring an array of geometric finds, from jewelry to minerals. Read on for more details…
