It’s an exciting time to be a Memphis-Milano aficionado! Due to the ongoing revival of this popular ’80s design style, a whole new wave of Memphis mania has emerged. Memphis design often makes an appearance in still life photography. Plus, some of the original Memphis Group designers (such as Nathalie Du Pasquier) are helping to create a fresh batch of products for a new generation. Not to mention, iconic Memphis pieces are being sold alongside the Memphis-style work of new designers through retailers such as Memphis Design Store.

There’s a still life revival going on as we speak, and over the next few months, we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite still life photography! Today we shine the spotlight on Gelatology, a workshop that uses the form of an ice cream cone as a way to explore eye-catching combinations of materials. Several years ago I purchased The Decorating Book by Mary Gilliatt, and it’s been my ’80s design guide ever since. One of the images that truly captivated me was the photo above. That carpet and textile pattern, identified as nothing more than green and white diagonal stripes, really stuck with me–so much so that I’ve considered trying to duplicate it with paint on the inside of my open kitchen shelving.
