It’s been a vibrant month here at Mirror80! Can you tell I’m celebrating the color and festivity of summer for as long as I can? But as someone who loves design, I’ve also noticed that this year more than ever, designers, bloggers and retailers have been putting a unique spin on fall (rather than getting wrapped up in the usual fall motifs). Pastels and even pineapples are emerging as trends, and this makes me realize that each new season or holiday is exactly what you make it.
Cacti, Succulents and Other Retro Plant Photos
Last week I ordered some ’80s design books from Amazon, and yesterday they arrived! Since we’re reveling in the retro possibilities of plants this week at Mirror80, I thought I’d share some of my favorite photos from The Complete Book of Houseplants & Indoor Gardening with you today. This book is packed with ’70s/’80s style. Read on for proof that our current obsession with houseplants has roots in the past…
Still Life Style: Plant Play and ’80s Colors
Happy Monday! I got some new plants this weekend so I could finish my current gardening projects, and before I arranged them in their containers, I decided to have a little bit of fun… Who can resist some still life styling on a fall morning?! I sure couldn’t. Throw in some art paper in ’80s colors and mineral samples, and the photo shoot was complete. Lots of plant play in today’s post. Enjoy!
Pumpkin Painting: New Memphis Motifs
Happy Fall! It’s the first official day of the new season, so I’m sharing a pumpkin painting project with you…and it’s filled with New Memphis style! Not to mention, it couldn’t be easier to pull off. My inspiration: the Memphis Milano-inspired designs that are increasingly covering new pillows, blankets, clothing and ceramics.
Fall Style at Mirror80
Happy Monday! This Wednesday marks the official start of fall, and after a busier-than-usual summer, I’m ready to settle in for some relaxing fun this autumn. Isn’t it great when a new season is on the horizon, and you can pretend that it won’t be as crazy as the one that came before it? Seriously hoping to slow down a bit, though. Whether life calms down or revs up, I intend to keep a few of my favorite traditions alive in the coming weeks, so I’m sharing my plans with you today, complete with photos and links to previous Mirror80 blog posts. Lots of fall style to enjoy…
New Memphis Decor
Happy Friday! Today I’m rounding up a collection of New Memphis decor that celebrates the power of pattern and geometry. These aren’t Memphis-Milano pieces from the ’80s. They represent a new take on the bold style we all know and love. And there’s a LOT of it around these days, so much so that retail chains like West Elm are even giving a nod to the look in their new collections. From the work of Etsy artisans to the prints of Society6 artists, there’s a lot of color and form to enjoy. Here goes…
A Soapdish-Inspired Awards Show Party
Ready for a party?! How about a viewing party with all the in-your-face color and glamour of the 1991 film Soapdish starring Sally Field, Kevin Kline and Robert Downey Jr.? Soapdish inspired today’s photo shoot, which we’re sharing with you just in time for this weekend’s Emmy Awards. Because a vibrant awards show viewing party is as easy as combining a few details in a bold display of retro-modern style…
’90s Movie Style: Soapdish
Today we revel in the Memphis-meets-Deco world of the 1991 film Soapdish, the story of a soap opera leading lady (played by Sally Field) whose real life drama rivals the absurd plot of her daytime drama! Not only is this film smart, hilarious and well-written, it features over-the-top set design that is a glorious mishmash of retro motifs. It’s elegant vintage meets postmodern. It’s tropical meets swanky. Ready for a closer look?…

Weekend Snapshots
Happy Labor Day, folks! You’re looking at an art installation by Rachel Simone Weil, who I interviewed last month right here at Mirror80. This past Friday I went to an open studio at Mass Gallery in Austin and was able to see her display of ’80s and ’90s femme arcade ephemera (I’ll share more details below). Throw in a lovely visit with my Mom-in-Law, some modern landscaping, and a few new blogging endeavors, and I’ve enjoyed a picture-perfect holiday weekend…
