If you’re a fan of Memphis-Milano design, perhaps you’ve noticed the candy colors, irresistible forms and texture-based patterns that items from this influential movement boast. In fact, the Memphis Group, a Milan-based collective of furniture and product designers formed in 1981, introduced its own brand of shocking color and geometry. Designers like Michele De Lucchi, Thomas Bley, and Ettore Sottsass put their creative stamp on the movement, as shown in the image above.

In last week’s ’80s photo shoot post, a metal shelf was covered in 1980s Deco ceramics and highlighted by berry-toned art paper backing. Needless to say, some love and preparation went into this shoot, from the color choice of the ceramics to the over-the-top floral arrangement. But the shelf’s final design evolution wasn’t quite as, well…pastel. Let’s take a look at the journey of this metal furniture piece, taking note of two different ways to bring ’80s design to today’s home…

When trips to Goodwill produced more ’80s ceramics than I realistically had room for in my home, there was only one thing to do: photograph them! But snapping pics with my digital camera wasn’t quite what I had in mind.

Thank you for being a friend. Not just because you were on my TV screen every week, Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia. But because a sense of peace came over me every time the opening credits of The Golden Girls ended and the screen was filled with a close-up of your house. And then we were transported inside, where tropical fabric, high ceilings and a plethora of lush plants were juxtaposed with your over-sized clothing and large enamel jewelry.
