When it came time to choose a song for the culmination of Mirror80’s week-long reflection on Neon Noir, we just couldn’t pass up a track with phrases like “You belong to the night,” “river of darkness” and “neon light.” Add a place on the Miami Vice soundtrack, and we knew we had our Friday Video Pick!
The 1985 video for “You Belong to the City” features nighttime scenes of busy New York streets, a leading lady whose dining room houses a potted palm and vertical blinds, and Glenn Frey as an attractive stranger who keeps crossing paths with her. Never mind that she, the security guard of her high rise, and the local bar all have Miami Vice streaming on their televisions. In fact, this wouldn’t have been a far cry from reality in ’85. Nor is a track that features both a saxophone and a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. Enjoy!

Great pick! This song was so evocative of the mood back in 85/86. The music and tone is similar to Lara Branigan’s Self Control from a couple of years earlier. It’s music that manages to be both dark and sensual at the same time and is best enjoyed while driving with the moonroof open at night. Frey always had attractive women in his videos to match his leading man looks.
Check out the video for Frey’s “The one you Love” to see him wooing and dancing with a very young (and Brunette) Rhonda Shear who would be best remembered as the hostess of the late 80’s/early 90’s weekend program USA UP! All Night

Hi, there. At first, I thought it was Cheryl Ladd. Then, a I realized she was someone else from on of those 1980’s movie hits. If you get to find out her name, please let us know. Thanks in advance. Cheers from northeren Brazil (the Amazon).
