The holidays are here…and I can’t stop watching festive movies set in the ’80s and ’90s! There’s something about the snowy New York of When Harry Met Sally, the magical department store of the 1994 Miracle on 34th Street re-make, and the twinkle light-filled Chicago streets of Vice Versa. Who’s with me here?! While watching, I captured a bunch of screen shots to share with you. Because there’s nothing like a retro Christmas in the city. Enjoy…
from When Harry Met Sally, filmed in New York City, released in 1989:
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in the gem of a romantic comedy that tracks our two main characters over more than a decade of friendship. Fun holiday scenes include a couple of notable New Year’s Eve parties, one of which is pictured below.
from Miracle on 34th Street (the remake), filmed in New York City and Chicago, released in 1994:
Two words: Santa’s village. It’s hard not to notice the department store Santa’s surroundings in this film. Because there’s a hint of Memphis-Milano style and a big dash of whimsy, proving that you can mix radiant colors, moon and star motifs, and holiday greenery to create a magical Christmas aesthetic for kids of all ages.
from Vice Versa, filmed in Chicago, released in 1988:
Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold star in this Freaky Friday-esque movie that features some fabulous ’80s department store scenes. Trust me on this!
Wishing you and yours the Happiest of Holidays! More to come this season at Mirror80… XOXO, Kate
