This week’s Friday Video Pick is not from the 1980s. But we just couldn’t take our eyes off the ’80s-inspired fashion in this video from 2008!
Roisin (pronounced “Ro-sheen”) Murphy first appeared on the scene in the mid-nineties as one half of the electronic musical act Moloko. When the group disbanded, Murphy began her solo career. “You Know Me Better” is a track from her second solo album, Overpowered, released in 2007. The album boasts a collection of soulful pop-oriented tracks, many with the dance-ability of your favorite ’80s albums. But the sound of Overpowered is too complex and varied to summarize with a one-word phrase, much like the wardrobe from today’s video.
…And speaking of the wardrobe, Murphy sports ensembles that flawlessly combine retro accents from a variety of eras. And herein lies the magic of the video! Pencil skirts and other ’60s/’70s accents (note the hairstyles) meet ’80s flourishes against the backdrop a retro-sleek home’s interior. But it’s those ’80s fashion touches that grabbed Mirror80! The over-sized hair accessories, puffy sleeves and plastic jewelry are irresistible. Let’s face it, “You Know Me Better” may as well serve as a primer on how to seamlessly blend vintage pieces from multiple decades with haute couture flair.
The video for “You Know Me Better” is supposedly based on the famous photography series Untitled Film Stills by Cindy Sherman. Enjoy, and Happy Friday!:
