If I were being obnoxiously blatant about creating a blog post that would go viral on social media, the title of today’s piece would be “You won’t believe these ridiculous ’80s screen shots that will make your jaw drop.” But I’ll spare you the tacky title and instead just promise lots of ’80s fun if you keep scrolling down. I mean, who wouldn’t want to start the day with James Spader’s face glaring at you the way he stared down Molly Rinwald in Pretty in Pink? And who would want to forget the crazy avant-garde dance performances of Cynthia Rhodes in the movie Flashdance? Keep reading for more style-packed screen shots….
I’ve featured all of these movie “stills” in previous Mirror80 posts, so follow the links if you want to read more about each film. And one of my very faves is the 1991 masterpiece Soapdish. There’s some heavy Deco-tropical style going on in the set design, and if you’ve ever watched (or made fun of) a soap opera, you’ll definitely be on board with the humor. Below we see the dinner theater where Kevin Kline’s character performs a horrible rendition of Death of a Salesman.
And the conference room of the film’s fictional soap, The Sun Also Sets… Come on–it’s crazy go0d, right?! A palette of red, yellow, blue and black can be found throughout the movie, and three of those colors are present below. Plus a boat-load of tropical greenery:
Let’s shift gears and look at some music video screen shots, shall we?! An under-appreciated Madonna hit, Burning Up has held up remarkably well over the years, especially in terms of the video’s style. Do you think she took off that armful of rubber black bracelets before going swimming or bathing? That’s not for us to worry about, is it…
You may not have guessed that this next screen shot is from Three Men and a Baby, a 1987 film that’s packed with ’80s interior design goodness. Each bachelor in the apartment has a beautifully designed 1980s bedroom, and below we see the room of Tom Selleck’s character, Peter. He’s an architect, and the sculptural details in this space are so. much. fun. Mostly because they’re over-the-top dramatic. And any space that adds a potted dracaena as a finishing touch gets my vote:
Last but not least, we focus on ’80s style icon Dale Bozzio, the lead singer of Missing Persons. Here she is in the music video for Give. Yes, she was rocking the multi-colored hair before any of us even thought about it. And look at that crazy metal and neon set. You can’t beat it…
Can you believe how these crazy-awesome ’80s screen shots made your jaw drop? I’ll stop. The pictures speak for themselves. XOXO, Kate
