Forget fancy recipes. Forget cookie decorating techniques. Today it’s all about fun with frosting—neon frosting! Whether you whip up a batch of foodie-fabulous icing or you buy a tub of Betty Crocker, make sure to keep things light and easy. Because cookie decorating during the month of October should be nothing less! Here are some simple yet radiant ideas for your Halloween junk food buffet…
As you can see, I used two types of icing: a typical store-bought frosting, as well as a simple glaze made by mixing powdered sugar and milk (I actually used half and half) until I had the desired thickness. It’s easy to drizzle the glaze over the thicker frosting, as shown below. My magic solution for the vibrant colors: neon food coloring! And you can even mix the neon coloring with regular food coloring for interesting hues like the tomato red of this glaze:
Color Block Frosting
For the color blocked cookie below, I swept a lime green frosting over the entire cookie, then took a knife and scraped off half the icing on the diagonal. I then used a spoon to “pour” on the glaze, filling in the the portion of frosting that I’d just scraped off. Since the green frosting is thicker than the glaze, it forms a nice barrier, preventing the glaze from bleeding over to the other side excessively. I topped the cookie with multicolored nonpareils and sugar sprinkles. It’s a bit messy, but it wouldn’t be fun if it weren’t, right?!
Neon Marks the Spot Frosting
This next idea is the easiest of the bunch! Sweep one layer of frosting over your cookie, then take a knife and scoop it into the vibrant frosting of your choice. Spread it across your cookie in one fell swoop, creating a simple diagonal line. Top your neon mark with colorful nonpareils, and you’re set!
Sugar-Dipped Frosting
For this colorful effect, frost your cookie, then dip the end into a container of colorful glaze. Sprinkle sugar on top of the glaze, then re-dip it so the color is saturated. Have fun mixing and matching a variety of neon hues!
Neon Drizzle Frosting
As with all of today’s easy frosting ideas, begin by spreading a layer of frosting over your cookie. Then drizzle your neon glaze over the cookie, creating playful zig-zags. Add a few sugar sprinkles for a frosty finishing touch:
The best part of today’s cookie decorating project is the fact that clean-up is kind of fun. How could you not secretly enjoy reveling in such a colorful mess?!…
