Ready for a party?! How about a viewing party with all the in-your-face color and glamour of the 1991 film Soapdish starring Sally Field, Kevin Kline and Robert Downey Jr.? For a slew of Memphis-meets-Deco screen shots that capture the look of the movie, check out this recent post. Soapdish inspired today’s photo shoot, which we’re sharing with you just in time for this weekend’s Emmy Awards. Because a vibrant awards show viewing party is as easy as combining a few details in a bold display of retro-modern style…
Setting the Stage
Let’s start with the basic recipe for viewing party success: colorful art paper + palm leaves + champagne + over-the-top displays of affordable food = party perfection!
It’s really that simple! The red, yellow, blue and black palette was inspired by the opening credits of Soapdish, as shown in a screen shot below:
I used scrapbook paper from a craft store to create a simple yet radiant table runner. Optional: blow up some white pearlescent balloons to create the look of bubbles. You know, since the movie is called Soapdish! Plus, there are plenty of bubbles in the opening credits. The marble tile below is actually a white marble floor tile embellished with black marble contact paper. See the full DIY project here.
Delicious Bites
About the food… It’s as easy as a trip to Trader Joe’s (or another affordable grocery). Fruit is not expensive. I scooped out one half of a watermelon to create a bowl that held grapes and (big surprise) watermelon. I embellished the bowl with citrus fruit slices. Below we see a cheese plate featuring a trio of goat cheese options, another Trader Joe’s purchase, like most of the food in this post. I also served spinach and kale bites, which you can see in the corner of the photo at the top of the post.
And for dessert…chocolate-filled batons and chocolate-covered marshmallows. If you want to serve more than appetizers and dessert, I’d suggest a large delicious salad and some sort of entree, such as fish fillets. Shrimp cocktail would also work well here, in keeping with the tropical theme!
While I used cut sago palm leaves (shown above) to add some of the tropical flair, note that this plant is toxic to dogs and cats, so keep animals away from the buffet table. Which you’ll want to do anyway, as dark chocolate is a no-no for pets as well. And of course, don’t forget the champagne, an essential for any awards show viewing party…
Here are a few more photos of the fun:
Hope this post finds you enjoying the last days of summer. Are you watching the Emmys this weekend? I’ve been a fan of TV since the ’80s, so I’ll definitely be tuning in. And munching on a cheese plate and plenty of chocolate, of course!
