Happy Wednesday, Everyone! If you caught last month’s post on early ’80s food styling, consider this a “part 2”! We’ve explored some fun photography trends of the ’70s-meets-’80s time frame, including dark backgrounds, creative garnishes and plenty of whipped cream. Today we take a look at a few more photos from the 1982 edition of The Encyclopedia of Creative Cooking, which is packed with amazing color photos of retro-fabulous food, like the hot baked grapefruit above. Ready for a few more?…
If you’re ever trapped in a cave, hopefully you’ll have a full bar at the ready so you can whip up some chocolate yogurt brandy (left) and a creme de menthe pickup (right). If you’re curious, that’s grenadine and sugar around the rim of the creme de menthe cocktail below:
Did you know that geo diagonal motifs were around in the early ’80s? Love that pink and blue design on the little diplomat cakes in the next image:
Sometimes it’s all about the icing! Or the chocolate cake triangles that cover the ice cream dome…In the next featured photos we see beautifully styled basic fondant icing (left) and a chocolate igloo (right):
When in doubt, add meringue… That’s the grand finishing touch on the queen-of-hearts crown cake below, which is packed with cherry pie filling:
Hungry? In the early ’80s, food styling was hardly about subtlety. Or quirky combinations of ingredients. What you see was what you got, and apparently what we often saw was fruit, whipped cream and meringue! I know…I’m over-generalizing. We’ll enjoy some mid- to late-’80s food styling next month. Stay tuned!
