Lately I’ve been looking back at past Mirror80 posts, and certain ’80s style elements continue to emerge. I thought I’d write a few new posts about specific 1980s aesthetics, and one that I can’t seem to get enough of is the lobby look. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been obsessed with hotel and bank lobbies, and the Decade of Decadence was an amazing time for this marble-, glass-, and brass-infused design. It’s equal parts swanky and chill. With a bit of bling, as reflected in the new artwork above (Trian Gold and DecO CintUra—from the Society6 shop of Simona Sacchi.)
Getting lost in the ’80s lobby look is surprisingly easy. Here are some ways to create a decadent experience. Start by doing yourself a favor and hitting “play” on this Spyro Gyra song (or this one…or for something more up-tempo, this one). Got some chill tunes going? Now you can proceed… There’s power in marble tiles and metal planters. Learn more about creating lobby-style plant vignettes in this post. Also, to get in the swanky mood, check out my tour of the Renaissance Hotel, which was built in 1986. Here’s a little preview:
To this day, I still unwind by visiting my favorite hotel, walking around the grounds, then coming home for a fabulous ’80s-style night in. We’re talking cocktails, elevator jazz, ’80s design books, a relaxing shower and a movie or two. Learn more about creating the ultimate ’80s experience here.
Yes, I collect ’80s perfume bottles (see below)! For food suggestions to help channel an upscale 1980s vibe, check out this yuppie cocktail party menu. Also, the backdrop in the photo below is a DIY project. Check out an easy way to make your own marble tile art.
Still listening to Spyro Gyra? I hope so! What are some of your favorite chill ’80s tunes? Include new synthwave pieces too, OK? Leave me a comment below! And don’t forget to check out my tour of the Renaissance Hotel for the ultimate in ’80s lobby luxe…
Happy Friday!

Just found your blog and I’m obsessed! You should check out pictures of the embassy suites lobby in charleston sc – more of a 70s vibe, but it’s a stunner!

Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN is another gorgeous hotel filled with plants, fountains, and waterfalls. It opened in 1977.

THANKS! I’ve always been obsessed with all the small things the 80s were made of, even if I was too young to really enjoy it at the time, but I had this nostalgic feeling and your blog is all I’ve always wanted to find ! Especially that I’m french and I don’t think there was this 80s touch we can heavily feel in US or England, so thank you so so much for synthetizing all the aesthetics and atmospheres I love !
