I’ve been working on a short story about time travel, and I’ve been super influenced by a retro-modern science fiction aesthetic that consists of stark, geometric visuals. I started a Science Fiction board on Pinterest, and today I’m sharing some of my favorite images. Exactly what types of photos spark sci-fi inspiration? Keep reading for a closer look…
Modern Art and Design
At the top of the post, we see a fluorescent acrylic piece by Regine Schumann via De Buck Gallery. In terms of modern art, if it’s minimalist and geometric, I’m immediately drawn to it. I’m equally inspired by modern design, and the grid-like furnishings of Andy Martin are no exception…
Neon
There’s something about neon that takes me away to another place. Below we see a tunnel-like 2013 light installation by Nonotak Studio:
Alexandra Von Furstenberg
I can’t get enough of Alexandra Von Furstenberg’s acrylic designs. I’m so drawn to her pieces, I had to give this designer her own section in today’s post. So many of her furnishings and accessories seem right out of the movie Tron. If you like the Trillion Acrylic Side Tables below, see more of her creations here.
Brian Halsey
It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with the artwork of Brian Halsey. Remember when I featured a couple of his pieces in this post? In the next image, we see Alpha III via eBay. In fact, Halsey’s pieces are regularly sold on eBay if you’re interested. My friend Jeff gave me two of the artist’s serigraphs from the ’80s. They were pieces from his Dad’s former office. I’d love to expand my collection!
Sci-Fi Movie Stills
From Liquid Sky to Blade Runner, my Science Fiction Pinterest board incorporates screen shots and stills from a few stylish sci-fi classics. Below is an image from a newer movie: Beyond the Black Rainbow. Directed by Panos Cosmatos, this 2010 film is a visually stunning work of art that channels a 1980s aesthetic. And the soundtrack is synth-fabulous! Prepare to be a bit creeped out. I still haven’t finished it, but I’m kind of a big baby in that department. It’s time for me to experience the rest of this masterpiece. Read more about the film here.
Crystals and Pyramids
It’s amazing how a crystal dome or triangular prism can instantly make me think of time travel and other dimensions. Do they have that effect on you? Here’s the Crystal Dome from Swarovski’s Kristallwelten museum via The Volts:
