It’s Oscar Sunday, and in honor of tonight’s festivities, I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite food pairings with you. In fact, these two combinations have been getting A LOT of attention in the foodie realm. Let’s take a quick snack break, complete with retro styling, shall we?…
Grapefruit and Thyme
First up: grapefruit and thyme. There are a couple of different ways I enjoy this duo, one as a mocktail and one as a cocktail. Wash a bundle thyme sprigs and soak them in a pitcher of grapefruit juice. This will infuse the juice with the flavor of the herb. It’s an amazing combo! The more you let the sprigs soak, the stronger the thyme flavor will be. Then pour the juice into a champagne flute and top with bubbly. Or San Pellegrino if you want to make it non-alcoholic! Garnish with a thyme sprig or two and enjoy.
Vanilla and Chili Powder
Next up: vanilla and chili powder. The chocolate and chili powder pairing has been big for awhile, but trust me when I say vanilla and chili powder is a winning combo. I’m too much of a chocoholic to stop there. Here’s my current favorite: a dark chocolate cookie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a sprinkling of chili powder. This dessert is super satisfying, even in small amounts. The chili powder brings out the flavor of the vanilla rather than fighting it. Seriously, chili powder is like a wake-up call for this dessert! I sometimes top it off with a piece of dark chocolate, as shown below:
I’m preparing both of today’s featured recipes for this evening, as well as a delicious lentil dish and an appetizer featuring apricot and mushroom. More on that food pairing in another post… Bon appetit!
