Happy New Year, Everyone! Before launching into the festivity of 2014 (there are some exciting things planned here at Mirror80), I wanted to take a minute and reflect on our favorite posts of 2013. Last year brought some delicious new developments, such as our Retro Foodie series, which explores creative ways to incorporate late ’70s-early ’90s design into your food and entertaining adventures. Another fun development: finally getting a new camera, which took our photo shoots up a notch. More fun to come in that department, but until then, here’s a look back at some of our favorite moments of the past year. Don’t forget to click on the links to view the full posts…
We begin with our ’80s Valentine’s Day Dessert Buffet from early February! After contemplating both an over-the-top approach involving crystal and roses and a cute heart-filled fete, the cute clearly won out:
This year we also enjoyed showcasing chic 1980s furniture finds from sites such as 1stdibs. Not only is it fun to shop these upscale pieces, simply browsing teaches us a TON about the decade’s best design..
In May we launched ’80s Fashion Week, kicking things off by highlighting some of our favorite Mirror80 fashion posts (including this past studio shoot with talented photographer Peter Tung). Other top moments of ’80s Fashion Week: our ode to 1980s fashion in music video and our roundup of ’80s fashion resources…
This year I got caught up in the rainbow of delight known as colorful ’80s design! Abstract geometry, sprinkles and confetti made many appearances on Mirror80 throughout 2013!
In fact, the mood board above inspired Mirror80’s 3rd Birthday Party, an occasion we celebrated in August with bright colors, plenty of balloons, and of course, lots of confetti.
This summer my hubby and I moved to a new home. We’re on a budget and definitely decorating piece by piece, but the 5 retro-style finds below were a great place to start. We also had fun with this ’80s fireplace makeover for the living room. We’ll continue to share our design progress throughout 2014!
With the arrival of my new camera came a desire to stage even more photo shoots! Like this ’80s-style vanity vignette that we showcased back in September. We even did a follow-up shoot with an “’80s teen” motif.
One of our most popular posts of 2013? This easy DIY paper strip art project, which I used to decorate my ’80s-style bathroom. Thanks to our readers for loving this post!
In October, Mirror80 began a series on bargain shopping for retro decor. We all know that Mid-Century modern finds are HOT. But it can be trickier to track down interior design favorites from the ’70s through the ’90s. So I personally hit an array of sources, from garage and estate sales to antique festivals. You can find the resulting tips and pointers here.
We end with one of my all-time favorite posts highlighting 3 go-to ingredients for instant ’80s style. Let’s hear it for confetti, sprinkles and metallic shred!
On that festive note, we wish you a rad 2014, filled with plenty of sparkle! Next week we talk goals for the new year, and we’ll launch a new column that’s sure to add a little style and rhythm to your step. Until then…
