Friday Video Pick: “Let Me Be the One” by Exposé

February 11, 2011 by Kate 1 Comment

Question of the Day: Which ’80s musical act could most effectively fill this room?:

Image from The Decorating Book by Mary Gilliatt (this is a decorating must-have, published in the ’80s!) available at Amazon.com

For this special “Valentine’s Day” edition of Friday Video Picks, Mirror80 was looking for the perfect video. A video whose heroines could conceivably live in a house with “candy-hued heart and rose” decor like this (see above).

Enter “Let Me Be the One” by Exposé. If you note the picture at the top of its post, with its individually-displayed roses, glossy couch pillows and painterly art by legendary Pop Artist Jim Dine, it’s no wonder Exposé could dance their way into the vignette. As you watch their video, note the individually-scattered long-stemmed roses, glossy dresses and painterly effects over close-up stills. It’s a match!

Now back to Exposé…

One of the qualities that made Exposé unique was its alternating of lead vocalist duties between group members. This track features the powerful voice of Gioia Bruno, who belts it out while wearing designer ’80s duds, often zebra-striped.

As you watch this video, be on the lookout for:

  • Mega-layered, product-filled hair, especially in the second half of the video (don’t tell me you weren’t striving for this in the ’80s, ladies…)
  • Lace: on gloves, hose and bows
  • A catwalk-style dress parade that rivals prom ads by ’80s couture big-shots Zum Zum and Jessica McClintock
  • Frequent reminders that lavender eye-shadow looks fabulous on green- and hazel-eyed women
  • Killer dance moves rivaled only by killer earrings (we mean it–especially the tasseled pairs worn by group member Ann Curless)
  • No shortage of close-ups (because if you aren’t singing in front of an empty frame or abstract sculptural wall art, you just aren’t singing)
  • The overwhelming desire to buy black lace-up high-heeled boots

Exposé fans should know that the group still performs live and is planning to release a new single this year!

Happy Friday!
