Shiny plastic, bright ceramics, grids, dots and diagonals… What fun it was to be a kid in the ’80s! I remember perpetually shopping at a store called It’s a Small World, hunting for the most colorful pens, stickers and toys I could find. And no color was spared–from pastels to hot candy hues, ’80s trinkets looked good enough to eat.
It’s a style I call ’80s Cute, and we at Mirror80 couldn’t let the month of February begin without paying tribute to this vivid, heart-filled wonderland of design! Common ’80s Cute motifs included:
- diagonal lines
- geometric shapes (triangles, dots, circles, and of course, lots of hearts)
- grids
- whimsical color combinations, with “bright” taking precedence over “sophisticated”
We love it because it’s playful. We love it because it’s unnecessary. We love it because it pushes the boundaries of color and taste. And on a cold winter day in February, it’s just the kind of jolt we need!
