We conclude our week-long focus on products and advertisements targeting ’80s teens with two commercials that celebrate all things bright and distracting! Let’s start with the following clip, an ad for Magic Girl perfume. In a fruity whirlwind of confusion, this piece puts the competition to shame with images of spellbound, obsessed teens.
And some pretty wicked ’80s fashion. As a 1980s pre-teen, I was wearing T-shirts four sizes too big, secured to my waist with draping knit bow belts, unlike the stylish youth in this clip. While the jingle is in English, the narration appears to be Dutch. This is ’80s commercial magic at its best!:
To follow such advertising greatness, we could select nothing less than a commercial for Miss Lee Press-On Nails. In fact, I seem to remember seeing this very commercial and being inspired by its promise of faux nails for smaller hands, as well as its assortment of pearlized ’80s pastel hues, such as “fresh grapes.” Remember, this was the era before acrylic nails took hold. These adhesive gems would accidentally detach mid-grasp, leaving their mark in school hallways across America. Gosh, I miss the pubescent awkwardness…
Wishing you a Friday as colorful as the grooming products featured in today’s ads!
