DIY Weepuls with Halloween Flair

October 26, 2017 by Kate Leave a Comment

Get ready for the ultimate in alien terror…masquerading as a pom pom craft. Remember the Weepuls?! If you grew up in the ’80s, you know these google-eyed, sticky foam-footed creatures well. And they never really went away, as the little slip of paper attached to their derriers makes them a popular promotional product. But today’s post is all about nostalgia, complete with a Halloween twist. Read on for all the details on making your own DIY Weepuls, plus a little bit of ’80s horror movie trivia!

After I spotted a gallery of Weepul images on Pinterest, I knew I had to make my own. But instead of a promotional message, I thought it would be funny to add ominous ’80s horror movie taglines and quotes. Because what could be more hilarious than a cute puffball trying to terrorize your office desk, right?!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • pom poms
  • google eyes
  • faux flower stamens
  • craft foam sheets (adhesive side optional)
  • paper or cardstock
  • a hot glue gun

To make your own Weepuls, simply glue two google eyes to each pom pom. The faux flower stamens (I ordered mine from amazon) can be bent into a v-shape and attached to the top of the pom poms as antennae. So easy! But it does require some patience, so definitely downgrade to regular school glue from hot glue if you attempt to do this project with kids. And maybe nix the horror movie slogans, mmmkay?!

Cutting out little feet also took a bit of time, so feel free NOT to cut 5 toes as I did. A few will do! The “feet” were actually one piece. The pom pom can be glued right on top. Use sticky foam if you want to attach these little guys to your desk, retro-style!

Don’t forget the slogans! You can glue them to the feet before you attach the pom pom. So. Much. FUN! Now…let’s play GUESS THE ’80s MOVIE TAGLINE (or quote)! You can find the answers at the bottom of the post, listed in the order they are presented in the photos. Enjoy!

This one totally cracks me up…

And now for the answers:

The Thing, The Fly, The Terminator, Gremlins, Critters

Hand out these little guys to your coworkers–they’re little but they pack a big laugh! I just might have to bring them back for Valentine’s Day, complete with props. There’s a Weepul for every season, after all! Happy Halloween to you and yours! Cheers, Kate
