Iris and Lily Motifs

The phrase “’80s floral” may conjure visions of pastel-hued Laura Ashley bedding, or drapes and wallpaper you hope you never see again. But what if some ’80s floral had a modern, Asian flair? Believe it or not, a contemporary floral motif of iris and lilies appeared on a variety of home decor accessories in the ’80s, from china patterns to wall art.

Above you see a plate in the Magic Moods pattern by Mikasa, manufactured from 1984-1989.

Here are a few you other floral finds from the decade of decadence:

Why This Take on ’80s Floral Works

Precisely because ’80s modern floral pieces blend nicely with clean-lined furniture, these contemporary representations of flowers can complement a variety of decor styles, from Art Deco to mid-century modern. When hunting for floral of the ’80s variety, remember:

  • Some pastels, such as lavender and pink, can look hopelessly outdated when showcased in floral patterns. But if the flowers have a modern edge, or if certain lines or angles in the pattern stand out, design triumphs over an Easter egg palette.
  • If pastels aren’t your thing, seek out florals that incorporate the color black, particularly when other hues such as peach are used as an accent. These color combinations can evoke a striking Art Deco feel or add a touch of knowing ’80s glam to a room.
  • Don’t hesitate to reinvigorate your favorite ’80s vase with an arrangement of fresh iris or lilies. These flowers make a simple, elegant statement and give a cheeky ’80s nod to your favorite ceramics from this totally awesome decade.

There must be something to these modern floral motifs….After all, we just can’t seem to let go:

LIKE WHAT YOU SEE? The good news: all of the finds from today’s post were purchased very reasonably at local resale shops. Thank you, Goodwill! Online dealers (hello eBay) are also great sources for specific china patterns of the modern floral variety.

So don’t forget to stop and smell the lilies…
