Ready for another retro summer experience?! This time it’s all about the pizza. In fact, pizza was front and center at a large number of my ’80s childhood events and occasions, from slumber parties to family dinners. And nothing beat pizza with a tall glass of ice cold soda. Because back before we knew the dangers loading up on carbs and massive amounts of sugar, indulging ended in a wonderfully full stomach…and (if I’m being honest) a slight queasy feeling. God, I miss the ’80s!
No, I’m not advocating a return to the days of pre-diabetic pre-teenhood. For this retro escape, you can always opt for a mini can of soda, or go with a lower-sugar fizzy drink. Even a slightly sweet spritz will do the trick. But to really give this decadent moment true retro flair, resist the urge to order a healthy pizza. Get take-out/delivery from your favorite local pizza chain and call it a hassle-free night!
Speaking of pizza night, I spent MANY an ’80s and ’90s night at Mr. Gatti’s Pizza. My Dad took me for my first pizza ever, and I was instantly hooked. To this day, if I see a lacquered wooden table and an arcade cocktail cabinet, I get all the retro feels. And crave a Coke. Glow sticks are optional…
You can probably tell that the pizza in these photos ISN’T from Mr. Gatti’s but I promise it was pizza chain-delicious! So here’s my proposal: pizza night! This summer! Preferably while watching something that takes you back to the ’80s. If you’re visiting with friends, one of Mirror80’s music video playlists is perfect for some background visuals and music. Or jump into a blockbuster like The Terminator. Or watch Stranger Things Season 3, which begins streaming July 4th!
While doing this photo shoot, yes, I ate the pizza and drank the soda. And listened to this Halloween playlist. I know, it’s the middle of summer, but for some reason pizza made me crave ’80s music that was a bit darker. Probably because I ate pizza at many an ’80s slumber party where we were completely unsupervised, had free reign of the VCR, and watched movies like Cujo and The Slumber Party Massacre. Which may explain all of that anxiety I had in elementary school!
So who’s ready for pizza night?! Keep the ’80s alive this summer. And if you’re looking for another retro escape to enjoy during the hottest months of the year, take an iced tea break. But with basic ’80s grocery store tea, OK? Keep in authentic. More summer fun awaits you in future posts.
