This summer is all about escaping into the ’80s! We’ve definitely been hit with a major wave of nostalgia, thanks to a slew of new television programs set in the 1980s, a retro-modern design revival in full force, and more ’80s movie remakes than we can count. So if you’re looking for a break from the mundane, there’s plenty of pop culture inspiration to grab. Today it’s all about escaping the heat with a tall glass of iced tea. Not artisan tea. Grocery store tea that you steep in boiling water, then pour over ice and garnish with lemon!
I’ve been using this little retro-style ritual as a way to take a quick break and get refreshed in the middle of the busiest, hottest days of summer. Folks, it’s quite effective. Maybe there’s something to taking the “Nestea plunge” after all. Remember those ’80s commercials that featured thirsty tea drinkers falling back into a pool of water?! Speaking of commercials, today’s retro-style shoot was inspired by this Nestea Ice Teasers commercial:
Cue the sliced citrus fruit and gradient background (I opted for blues, greens and yellows)…
A word about the straws: we all know that plastic bendy straws instantly channel a retro vibe! That’s why I used them for the shoot. However, they’re really terrible for the environment, as there’s been a lot of recent press about the way they end up in the ocean and endanger sea creatures. Consider opting for paper straws, such as the striped variety for an extra dose of festivity!
Whatever you do, don’t forget the citrus fruit!!! Even the process of cutting the lemons and limes for this photo shoot instantly relaxed me and filled my kitchen with the smells of summer. Such an easy way to escape for a 10-minute break in the middle of a hectic day. If you can, get to a screen and watch a few commercials from the 1980s while sipping your instant tea.
Stay tuned for more nostalgia-filled ’80s escapes this summer. Next up: pizza. That’s all I’ll say. Until then…

I’m glad you’re back. Your content is really fun.
I used to drink tea ’round the clock from about age 10 to 30. I’ve stopped in the last couple years or so, just ’cause making tea is more work than filling the Brita pitcher, but this definitely reminds me of being a kid.

Thank you so much! It’s good to be back!! It’s funny how I’ve become more of an iced tea drinker the older I’ve gotten. But it’s totally not a true thirst quencher since it’s so dehydrating (at least, the caffeinated kind). Still, it really reminds me of being a kid–when a pack of Nestea or Lipton was all it took to have a refreshing moment!! Thanks for writing!

There was a Nestea commercial from the 80s for Ice Tea featuring two champagne glasses with ice cubes being thrown into the glasses in slow motion. It had a beautiful gingle playing with the lyrics something like Nestles is the very best cool breeze Nestles is the very best. I love that song and would love to hear it again.
