It’s been awhile since I’ve shared a playlist, so today it’s all about retro summer fun! In some cases, the summer playlist vibe comes more from the videos than the songs, so get ready for some ’80s beachy style. A few notes: trust me when I say that Nick Heyward’s “Laura” is the epitome of carefree innocence. Throw in the seaside setting, and you have a summer jam that’s smoother than a Mentos commercial.
“If This Is It” by Huey Lewis and the News is the ultimate ’80s beach video. The opening features quick scenes of beachgoers getting ready for a day at the coast. Snaps to the woman who throws a romance novel and a bunch of cassette tapes into her white plastic purse. Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” might seem like an obvious choice, but if even you’ve heard the song a LOT, really take a good look at the video. Never have overalls and head scarves been so stylish. And “(What) In the Name of Love” by Naked Eyes features the most outrageous pool party/mansion getaway I’ve ever seen!
If you’re surprised that certain tracks like Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” or “Vacation” by The Go-Go’s are missing, take that up with YouTube. I tried, y’all. If other videos don’t seem obviously summery, know that there was a reason for including them. I featured Howard Jones’ “Like to Get to Know You Well” for the steel drum (and amazing ’80s graphics), mmkay?! Finally, promise me you’ll watch Chris Rea’s “On the Beach”. Such. Gorgeous. Imagery! Without further ado, enjoy this ’80s summer playlist, and check out Mirror80’s entire collection of playlists here, or by subscribing to our YouTube channel…
