Checkered floors are a classic design feature, and they have the power to look retro in the soda shop sense of the word. But I love the way they can veer into whimsical territory, which is why they pair so nicely with bright hues, geometric shapes, cloud motifs and Memphis-Milano decor. Below you’ll find photographs of 1980s interiors featuring checkered floors… [image above from The International Book of Lofts]
First up: a modern kitchen with elements of folk art sprinkled in. The floor consists of “institutional, easy-care vinyl,” and the photo comes from the September 1986 issue of Metropolitan Home:
Black and white tile can add modern drama, as with this kitchen featured in Decoration and Design for the 80’s by Pamela Ferguson (photo by Scott Chaney):
There’s something ’20s/’30s about this home designed by Bruce Thompsett. Yet it’s definitely slick and modern. Here’s a bathroom from the same residence:
Ready to get theatrical?!… This Paris loft from the ’80s features trompe l’oeil painted floors and plenty of theater set props. Loft resident (and musician) David Rochline poses below in his fabulous interior:
The loft was featured in The International Book of Lofts (from 1986). Here’s another dreamy room with painted floors:
…and last but not least, let’s end with a celebration of luxury tile, courtesy of The Decorating Book by Mary Gilliatt:
I love how the photos above feature interiors with a range of tile options, as well as painted floors that evoke the look of actual tile. No flooring budget? Try a black and white checkered rug to get a similar effect. Today’s roundup of retro interiors with checkered floors inspired Mirror80’s latest photo shoot. Pics and details in Wednesday’s post! Until then, have a fabulous week…
