Today we launch a new series called Pattern Play. Similar to our Still Life Style series, Pattern Play will take a look at top trends in patterns. If you haven’t yet noticed that patterns are having a moment, just head on over to Pinterest. Or Tumblr. Or Society6! Whether you’re looking for artwork to display on the wall or you need desktop wallpaper for your laptop, there’s a LOT to choose from. Today we focus on dark outlines. Some patterns featuring images with dark borders are firm and geometric, as shown above in a design by Yoko Honda. Others include lines that are a bit more playful. There’s something about this style that reminds me of the pop art of James Rizzi, featured on Tom Tom Club ’80s album covers:
We know, the album cover above doesn’t represent a pattern. But the vivid colors, dark outlines and childlike motifs are alive and well in many of today’s featured images. Next we see a scarf pattern from Rawaan Alkhatib. Her work is AMAZING…
Below (right) is a design from Honju Ko. The original source of the watermelon pattern has been a bit tricky to track down. If you know its origin, leave us a comment below and we’ll make sure to update the post. Let’s continue with the food motifs, shall we?…
And of course, we can’t forget the abundance of squiggles and zigzags. And dinosaurs. And unicorns. Here’s a pattern from Tim Colmant (below, right). Anyone know who created the pattern on the left?
Be sure to check out Mirror80’s Patterns board on Pinterest for more colorful fun! Hope your day is filled with the stuff of dreams, from rainbows and unicorns to diamonds and French fries.
