Hi Everyone! Today we begin a new series that celebrates the myriad of ’80s design images featured on our favorite Tumblrs. So many photos, so little time! It’s our goal to curate an amazing collection of interior design pics that can teach us about getting the ’80s look at home. Today’s theme: simple and sleek.
Above we see an image of marble tiles and metal grids. No, we’re not trying to toot our own horn, but it IS from the Mirror80 Tumblr. And it epitomizes the current design realm’s obsession with simple forms, as well as materials such as marble and brass. And speaking of revivals, there’s a definite geo craze right now, and much of it channels ’80s design elements. The room below (featured at deargenekelly) looks as if it’s pulled from a CB2 catalog. As in this year!
With the help of our favorite Tumblr images, let’s look at some amazing design elements we can all easily incorporate into our interiors. Like geometric pillows and Parsons end tables (the thickness of the top is the same as the thickness of the legs).
And anything with a grid on it is basically a winner. Gridded pillows, anyone? The interior below from Tumblr fave Zonkout reminds us to reconsider how we hang our artwork. Try propping a geometric piece at an angle, or framing it with an interesting backdrop!
Don’t you love this combination of gridded tile and plants, courtesy of Tumblr commonchant?
Another current design trend with roots in the past: pastels. Top it off with a minty tile border, and you’re set. Add a simple clear glass vase in a pastel hue, then fill it with flowers that reinforce the color scheme. The image below is from drydockshop. This Tumblr has knocked our socks off. Stay tuned for more from drydockshop next week!!!
We end with one final image from Zonkout: An interior by Lew Dolin. More pastels. And ’80s-fabulous electronics. But what caught our attention were those crazy sculptural floral arrangements. Simple yet dramatic…
Geometric motifs, clean lines, grids, pastels, interesting greenery, unconventional artwork. All of these concepts from the past are alive again in the present. And they reinforce the sleek aesthetic that we love. Stay tuned for more ’80s interior design inspiration from Tumblr in future posts…
