With Thanksgiving officially over, the Christmas season is upon us! If you are a design freak like me, and you were wondering how to bring a little ’80s to your holiday decor, look no further… Today we showcase 5 Christmas decoration ideas that spotlight 1980s design motifs. And you don’t have to go vintage to get the ’80s look!
1. Crystal
Yes, it’s that easy! Incorporate some crystalline style into your Christmas vignettes. I try and find any excuse to display the ’80s swan above, a vintage Gloria Vanderbilt crystal find. So when the holidays arrive, I fill it with silver ornaments and make it a centerpiece. If you have crystal frames that you never thought would come back in style, now is the time to dig them out. Yes, we’re serious. Which is why I was delighted when my sweet Mother-In-Law gifted us with a Mikasa crystal nativity scene, likely from the 1980s. You just can’t go wrong with crystal!
2. Silver on Silver
Many an ’80s modern tree was silver. And filled with silver ornaments. Luckily, you can purchase a tinsel tree for mere dollars, and a box of silver ornaments is equally cheap. Bring on the ’80s style with a simple trip to the craft store. Or even the drug store! By the way, this silver on silver look can transcend to garlands, trim and other holiday decorations. Or try gold on gold!
3. Swans
If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog, you know that my friends and family have tried to enroll me in Swans Anonymous on many an occasion. But nobody else ever shows up for the meetings… Seriously, I have a little problem collecting ’80s swans. Crystal, ceramic, it doesn’t matter. If it’s a swan, I’ll find a place for it in my house. So why would I pack the swans away for the holidays? Now is the perfect time to display them! If you haven’t yet become a collector and you want to purchase one (or hundreds), head to Goodwill. These Deco finds were used to hold wash rags and guest hand towels in many an ’80s bathroom. But no need for cloth today! Add some silver foliage and it’s instant Christmas style!
4. White Trees
The Christmas tree above (yes, the one behind the swan) is reminiscent of ’80s modern style at its finest. Want proof? Check out this post on contemporary Christmas decor from the ’80s film Less Than Zero. Purchase a white tree, and decorate it with blue and silver ornaments. Instant ’80s.
5. Metallic Planters
Remember this metallic planter I purchased in February? Time to take out the tropical foliage and fill it with a poinsettia. Because there’s nothing like the feel of an ’80s bank lobby at Christmas! Bring the look to your living room this holiday season…
Stay tuned for more ’80s holiday fun… This past weekend I hosted an ’80s-style Christmas luncheon. Read all about it, including the recipes and the decor, on Friday!
