Maybe it’s the backlash against the handmade, crafty aesthetic of Etsy, or perhaps people are looking for glamour with an edge… Either way, this season’s ’80s-style jewelry has knocked our socks off! For years, we’ve been scouring vintage boutiques for solid collar necklaces and Deco-style earrings. You know, the stuff that many an ’80s lady wore to the office, then later to a night at the club. 1980s glam style has returned to the mainstream, thanks to retailers like Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters. This calls for a celebration, so you’ll have a place to wear these not-so-subtle finds!
Above we see the Rhinestone Rope Chain Necklace and the Braided Collar Necklace, both from Forever 21. Doesn’t the braided necklace on the right evoke the interlaced strands of the ’80s twisty bead craze? Keeping it simple with metallic and white beads is a chic take on the original fad.
Below we see an explosion of ’80s Deco style, thanks to the amazing jewelry designers at Urban Outfitters. The Diament Jewelry for Urban Renewal Vintage Collar Necklace is crafted of mixed metal and intentionally draws on retro style for its wonderfully over-the-top presence. The Square Vintage Post Earrings remind me of my ’80s Deco vase collection. So of course, I have to buy a pair!
We now venture back to Forever 21, this time with a curvy pair of Rhinestoned Loop Earrings (below, left) and the Twisted Chain Necklace (below, right). The earrings remind me of the BIG jewelry I wore as a child in the ’80s. Yes, as a pre-teen, I looked like an over-accessorized secretary, complete with shoulder pads. Now I get a second chance to properly wear this elegant (and fun) jewelry!
We end with the Striped Retro Earrings (below, left) and the Rhinestoned Square Studs (below, right) from Forever 21. Have we mentioned how refreshing it is that ’80s-style Deco glam jewelry can now be purchased brand-new, and for mere dollars?!!!
Let today’s fall finds inspire you to stock up. If you have a bit more time, use the design of this jewelry to fuel your search for actual vintage pieces. The key: admit that they’re over the top, and wear them well. As with so many other ’80s fashion elements that have returned, glam jewelry is a hit precisely because it beats you over the head with its eye-catching design. Remember that a little goes a long way, but don’t bother wearing it unless you plan on calling attention to yourself! Happy Monday!
