Today we go back in time and spotlight Fall fashion trends from the ’80s that are back in full force. You may think the photos above and below were snapped this year, but think again. All came from publications featuring actual ’80s designs. First we showcase a tribal patterned fabric by Furphy Simpson (shown above), which boasts a variety of stripes and earth tones. Who says tribal wear is just for summer?
Now take a look to your left. Is that the guy you saw at the Twin Shadow show last week? Actually, it’s actor Jeremy Irons in a 1984 ad for Gianni Versace’s spring/summer campaign! And his tall, elegant stance is ideal for these designer duds, which perfectly drape and fold, complete with a belt that ties it all together. Amazing!
The popularity of head scarves in today’s world of accessories is no secret. But instead of going boho, why not go retro with the scarf placement, then cement this look with a vintage denim jacket from the 1980s, as shown in the image below? Yes, denim is one of today’s top 1980s flashback fashion trends, and this Levi’s jacket shows us exactly why.
Don’t be afraid to add a pin or two to the collar. Also, note how the model has added a little lift to her ‘do. Somehow a classic scarf manages to look New Wave in this context. What’s not to love?!
As you shop for your fall fashion finds, don’t forget to look into the past for inspiration. If you lived through the ’80s, you know that certain styles were less than flattering. But the trends that have re-emerged are worth a second look. Consider tribal prints, which were often present on over-sized clothing pieces that dwarfed anyone other than the models who advertised them. Now the patterns are back, but in more slimming cuts. You’ve gotta love hindsight!
Happy Wednesday!
