In her book 1980s Fashion Print, Marnie Fogg writes of ‘80s “Glamazon” fashion, which among other things included print designs featuring ribbons, bows, ropes, flags, swags, animal prints, and yes—tassels and chains! Guess what, folks? Glamazon fashion is back! That’s right—the luxury and excess of ‘80s print design can be found on clothing from the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Forever 21. Get ready for some swanky trompe l’oeil greatness!
Adorned, bejeweled style gained popularity in the ’80s thanks to designers like Bill Blass, Coco Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. By the time this trend trickled down to the department stores, I was starting high school, and my petite frame was way too small to be carrying shoulder pad-laden blouses with enough printed bling to mute out any semblance of my being. But that didn’t stop me from reveling in this ornamental look, and topping it all off with giant gold earrings that made me look like a malnourished secretary. Thank goodness today’s pieces are a little more fitted! Below we see the ASOS Legging in the Chain and Tassel Print:
But there’s still room for some chic, over-sized fun. Check out the Scroll Kimono Chiffon Blouse by Jennifer Lopez:
Let’s keep it interesting by adding an animal element! Thanks goodness for the cheeky Wild Bejeweled Print Sheath Dress from Forever 21. Go get ’em, tiger…or leopard!
Keep an eye out for these “decked out” pieces. They are fun for fun’s sake, and this time around, there’s a size and style for every body type! Have a glimmering Wednesday!
