I keep coming across shelving options that scream ’80s. Perhaps it’s the geometry of the pieces, or maybe it’s the use of lacquer, gloss and mirrors. Definitely for bolder design tastes, these display items are scene-stealers. One thing is for sure: my collection of ’80s ceramic swans would look amazing against the backdrop of chrome and glass!
First we have the Equilibre 3 by Pierre Cardin (above, left). Equal parts sculpture and conversation piece, the furnishing consists of a wooden module embedded in a double diamond of chrome. Even better, the module includes red lacquer doors. I could go on, but I’m so overcome with the awesomeness of this piece, I should stop while I’m ahead. On a side note, the item bears a striking resemblance to a chrome étagère featured in a 1986 Sofa Mart commercial from a previous post, but on a high-end scale, of course!
If you could turn an ’80s perfume bottle into a display shelf, you’d have our next item, the Roxy Diamond Display Cabinet (above, right). The piece seems to be available only in the UK, but I had to include it, in part because I couldn’t believe my eyes. Glass shelving and mirrored backing complete the look, which is “Saved by the Bell meets Vegas” in the best possible way!
Next we have the Butterfly Display Unit by Creative Furniture:
Chrome and plated steel meet tinted tempered glass for a true vintage vibe. To pull this one off, you can’t be shy! Better yet, stack two units together for a wall-length display, as shown in the image above.
It’s so nice to know that remnants of ’80s style are alive and well in the world of contemporary shelving… Happy Monday!
