Can you spot the ’80s in the Vogue September Issue?

The Fall fashion season in upon us! A true highlight of this idea-rich time of the year is the Vogue September issue. Many read it from cover to cover. So did Mirror80, and we were struck by the ’80s references on the pages, especially in some of the ads. While each ’80s motif may not have been intentional, here are a few of our favorites nonetheless, along with the flashback fun they evoke.

The Balenciaga ad excerpt (cropped) at the top of this post reminds us of the rampant and stylish use of grids in the ’80s, as in the video for Olivia Newton John’s “Physical.” The full Balenciaga ad features an all-encompassing grid on both walls and floor. One model even carries a grid-themed purse!

The lush fabrics of Nina Ricci take center stage in images from the design house’s Fall ad campaign. Models pose in front of lush gardens, draped in rich materials. The Nina Ricci ad excerpt below reminds us of the velvet-clad leading ladies of Duran Duran’s video for “Notorious,” back in the day when flowing fabric and flowing hair equaled music video magic:

Next we have a Vogue photo shoot, photographed by Steven Meisel. The piece notes Fall trends, and the ’40s-inspired look below can’t help but remind us of Blade Runner’s Rachael in all of her vintage-inspired glory:

To end, we have a flashback of another sort. Who would’ve thought little Gertie from ET would grow up to be a Cover Girl as well as an actress? Oh how time flies…

We hope you enjoyed our ’80s-inspired romp through Fall’s most anticipated fashion mag!
