Geometry and color highlight this 1984 video for Howard Jones’ hit single “Like to Get to Know You Well.” The sleeve of the single featured the phrase “Dedicated to the original spirit of the Olympic Games,” although the song was not officially affiliated with the Olympics. Throughout the ’80s, Jones combined optimistic lyrics with synthpop to form a unique style that garnered him a string of hits.
The video for “Like to Get to Know You Well” makes use of various techniques, most likely green screen and video processing, among others. The result: a quintessential ’80s look, complete with hot colors and animated shapes. For the portions of the video shot in black and white, here’s a little something I’d like to get to know well: a colorized version of that awesome patterned button-down shirt Howard Jones sports.
Furthermore, you can’t watch this video without noting the abundance of hand gestures, all by Jones, perfectly conveying the lyrics, from “weather” to “news.” How can you not love the energy and optimism of Howard Jones?! Not to mention, the reggae feel of this great track.
And now, the video… Enjoy the sounds of the steel drum and the playful bursts of color on this Happy Friday:
