To kick off February, let’s rewind to 1986, when Stacey Q’s “Two of Hearts” became a top-five hit. How nicely its peppy sound complements this week’s earlier post about cute, shiny ’80s collectibles. But as is the case with many aspects of ’80s culture and style, there’s often more than meets the eye…
What you may not know is that Stacey Q (born Stacey Lynn Swain) had a dance background before turning her talents to singing, is a former entertainer for both Disney and the Barnum & Bailey Circus, made guest appearances on The Facts of Life (at one point playing George Clooney’s love interest), and was part of a Kraftwerk-influenced synthpop group called Q in the early ’80s. That’s quite a resume!
In today’s Friday Video Pick, Stacey Q dances and sings, all the while displaying an incredible range of fashion choices. From the headband and tribal shirt pairing that could grace the pages of a Bongo Jeans ad campaign to the over-sized black turtleneck tank worn with matching leggings and mega-hoop earrings, ensembles showcase some key ’80s styles.
But the video’s other star is the ’80s-fabulous hair of Stacey Q. Her mane was the envy of many a woman, teen and tween during this decade of excess. And those of us with less than excess-ive hair still attempted to style our bangs and create the illusion of a perm. Few had the success of Stacey. Check out her asymmetrical updo, windblown down-do, side ponytail with spiky bangs, and at one point, even a touch of greenery.
Happy February, and Happy Friday!
