Stair-step and diamond motifs. Teal, mauve, peach, purple and turquoise. When it comes to interior design, many of us may have assumed these ’80s living room patterns and hues were a trend of the past. But on a weekend shopping trip to Urban Outfitters, I learned that the colors and patterns of ’80s Southwestern style may be finding their way back into the mainstream via the fashion realm. Check out the hand tattoos above…
Has Urban Outfitters forecasted a resurfacing trend?
A look back to ’80s interior decor thanks to design guru Mary Gilliatt may shed some light on the subject:
In her 1980s Decorating Book, Gilliatt spotlights key styles of the decade of excess, including a few nods to ’80s Southwestern:
Though not blatantly Southwestern, a touch of abstract turquoise and pink window treatment decor mixes nicely with modern light fixtures in the picture above. There’s eclectic potential here…
This wallpaper sample is similar in motif to the hand tattoos at the top of the post. There’s power in dramatic lines and angles…
Maybe a nod to ’80s Southwestern flair has new style potential in the worlds of fashion and interior design. After all, the teal nail polish displayed on the hand tattoos above suggests a cheekier, more updated take on ’80s Southwestern–one that makes a point to appreciate the geometry and bold use of color! I guess time will tell…

Looks like it could be something that you could also find with the fashion at H&Ms. I am Swedish so that’s what came to my mind but I have seen similar motifs in those colors at other fast fashion brands. Popular with the neon, bright and pastel colors when it comes to fast fashion. But I really like the colors. I saw similar colors one evening this week when I went out for a walk close to the seaside and it was sunset. The colors of the ocean were dark blue, bluegreen/ turquoise like in the fall and winter time and the sky was light blue and light pink. Very pastel color like. Made me think of the 80s or some retro style. Really beautiful and pretty. The beach is a limestone beach so everything is in a grey stone shade. The trees and bushes at the greenside are dark forest green color. Really a mix!
