Today we launch a new series called Style Icon, and in our minds, the first to be featured absolutely had to be Terri Nunn. It’s hard to know what this lovely lead singer of Berlin was best known for: her hair or her fashion sense. But why choose? She could rock a period costume, as in the ’30s-inspired video for “No More Words.” People still emulate her famous black-tipped hairdo. Knit dresses, sequined formals, hats…she pulled it all off with effortless style. In fact, if you’re shopping for retro ’80s pieces and you’re not sure how to pull off a frock with shoulder pads, watch a Berlin video and take notes…
Today we round up some of our favorite ’80s images of Terri, whose chiseled looks are matched only by her flawless voice. It’s no wonder her face was superimposed on the figure of a mannequin in the video for Sex (I’m A). And her tousled blonde locks celebrated ’80s decadence without overdoing it. Wondering if you can pair a red puffy-sleeved dress with a silk trench and top it all off with a hat? Check out the music video for “The Metro.” In fact, we now present a montage of Terri’s favorite looks (featuring screen shots from the videos mentioned in today’s post). Browse this pics, then read on for some fashion pointers based on Terri’s unforgettable style:
’80s Style Tips We’ve Learned From Terri…
- Don’t lose your waistline. We all know the ’80s were filled with BIG fashion ensembles. Yet often we shy away from purchasing retro pieces because we’re afraid they will swallow us. Here’s a tip: No matter how big the sleeves or slouchy the top, wear a wide fitted belt, and the outfit won’t wear you. If a belt isn’t appropriate, make sure the frock is fitted at the waist. Hey, those Berlin videos don’t lie!
- A fabulous outfit calls for fabulous hair. You’ve got to own the look! Quite often, “big” clothing calls for big hair. Within reason, of course. Terri’s tousled coifs are perfect for the ’80s glam dresses she rocks. If you don’t want to tease your ‘do, throw in some hot rollers and run your fingers through your hair…
- Define your features with bold makeup. Obviously the level of bold you choose depends on the occasion. An ’80s blouse you wear to the office might not call for glossy red lips and outlined eyes. But a night out may be the perfect time to debut your new black liner. Terri’s style says it all–the sleeves were puffed, the hair was wild, but the makeup was precise. Nothing like a little defined detail to punctuate (and reel in) a decadent look.
Thanks for the inspiration, Terri! This beauty is still as lovely as ever today. Learn more about her current radio show here. And stay tuned for our next Style Icon feature in October…

YES. Terri was a truly bold, bitchen wild woman with fearless style and an attitude to match. On top of everything else, she was a real master of stagecraft. You can see all three qualities in this video: http://youtu.be/ys2wlElo8AI They don’t make female stars like that anymore! Thank you so much!!!

By the way…not many people realize it, but Terri really had a very petite frame and petite face. She used her hairstyle to frame her face perfectly, and she offset her dancer’s physique with equally balanced proportions of volume and slenderness in her clothing. Another tip to remember if you are on the delicate side and dying to pull off a New Wave look.
