Mirror80 Wishes You a Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving from Mirror80! Today’s visuals are courtesy of Etsy shop VintageStickerLove. The perfect ’80s Thanksgiving statement (a bit of Autumn plus a bit of glitter), these vintage leaf stickers from Stickopotamus showcase a variety of Fall hues. I’m also a fan of the shop’s profile, which recalls the memory of a lost sticker collection and the joys of rebuilding it piece by piece today. Because it’s never too late to revel in the simple pleasures of youth…
Crazy for Caboodles!
Ladies of the ’80s yearned for oodles of Caboodles. Or maybe just one good one to stylishly carry their grooming products. These beauty organizers by Caboodles of California were packed with storage options, including pull-out trays in a variety of configurations. And of course, each case had a built-in mirror, the ultimate primping essential.
Friday Video Pick: “Bulletproof” by La Roux
In the spirit of ’80s graphic design, we set out to select a mind-blowingly stylish video for today’s Friday Video Pick. A video that could be a Trapper Keeper if it materialized into a school supply. There was only one choice for us: “Bulletproof” by La Roux! It may not be from the ’80s or even an ’80s copycat, but moments of ’80s influence can’t be denied. From the black and white grids to the floating geometric shapes, it’s hard to keep up with the visual changes packed into this 3 1/2 minute work of art! The beginning even features a backdrop that evokes the color and pattern combinations present in the design of ’80s powerhouse collective The Memphis Group.
Pic Fix: A Flock of Seagulls Album Covers
This week Mirror80 celebrates that magical mixture of art and graphic design that is the 1980s album cover. We’ll reflect on album cover trends from our favorite decade, spotlight the resemblance between cover art selections of various ’80s musicians, and show you how to use ’80s fashion to recreate the look of famous covers. We start today with the album cover art of A Flock of Seagulls, the New Wave band that hooked ’80s audiences with their space-age sound and technology-influenced visuals.
Friday Video Pick: “Careless Memories” by Duran Duran
After reeling from the shock of discovering a Duran Duran video that I hadn’t yet seen, I was quickly smitten with the ’80s decor showcased in various scenes. From the chrome and glass coffee and dining tables to the white sofa and ’80s Deco lighting, it was all I could do to keep from whitewashing my living room and filling it with musicians in New Romantic blouses. Top it off with a vase of tulips, and I’m in ’80s design heaven.
Friday Video Pick: “We Can Change It” by Jem
For a “Halloween weekend” Friday Video Pick, we bring you this seasonal piece by Jem, the unbelievably stylish ’80s cartoon series we’ve profiled all week. See Jem and the Holograms in costume, singing about making positive changes while fending off a giant cat, bat, and Frankenstein-esque monster. At the very least, the video will tempt you to consider adding hot pink and lavender as accent colors to your witch costume…
The World of Jem: So Glam, So Punk
Today Mirror80 profiles the world of Jem, a Hasbro/Marvel Productions/Sunbow Productions cartoon series that ran from 1985-1988. Japanese animation studio Toei Doga contributed the animation, while advertising agency Griffin-Bacall Advertising (who founded Sunbow Productions) created the series’ 65 episodes. And boy did they put their stamp on the look of the show!
Pic Fix: Jem and the Holograms
I remember the childhood Halloween I dressed up as a punk rocker. I had colorful plastic bracelets, black netted accents, and of course, purple hairspray from an aerosol can. It’s in this very spirit that Mirror80 takes a week to reflect on ’80s glam-punk. No, we’re not referring to the music genre also known as glitter punk. We’re talking about that ’80s visual/fashion-forward style that combines elements of punk style with ’80s glitz. It’s the reason why characters from the hit cartoon series Jem can wear ripped clothing and Kiss-reminiscent face paint while lounging in interior spaces that channel the set of Dynasty.
