We conclude our week-long focus on products and advertisements targeting ’80s teens with two commercials that celebrate all things bright and distracting! Let’s start with the following clip, an ad for Magic Girl perfume. In a fruity whirlwind of confusion, this piece puts the competition to shame with images of spellbound, obsessed teens. And some pretty wicked ’80s fashion!
This week Mirror80 takes a look at the attention-grabbing graphic design styles that emerged during the 1980s, an attention-grabbing decade! While a variety of techniques abounded, today we examine some of the boldest. The image above, recently designed by Andrew Guengerich to evoke the ’80s, was inspired by Trapper Keeper patterns and motifs. We continue by examining 1980s collectibles and media-related items, noting a variety of graphic design styles that captivated the decade’s consumers.
This week Mirror80 spotlights the style we call Glam-Punk, that striking combination of formality and rebelliousness that only the ’80s could pull off. The beauty of the look is in the way decadent fabrics were brought down to Earth by geometric accessories, jagged edges and playful motifs.
On the eve of Fall’s official beginning, I invited family to join me for a Halloween-themed dinner party. I wanted to give the event an ’80s twist. My brother and I were kids in the ’80s and remember many a Halloween season spent watching cartoons, buying neon props for our costumes, and reveling in the wonder of the decade’s best junk food.
I won’t deny that it was the Old Navy back-to-school commercial to the tune of “Sister Christian” that reminded me it was time to revisit the music videos of Night Ranger. But it doesn’t matter how I got here… Let Night Ranger usher in your back-to-school season with these two classic videos!
As we look back at Mirror80’s first year in the blogosphere, we’re revisiting some of our favorite posts. Today the focus is Friday Video Picks, those ’80s music videos that have captured our attention. We’ve blogged about many of them over the past year. Here are our five all-time favorites.
Mirror80 concludes My Little Pony Week with music videos from two Eighties ladies with hair to rival the most elaborate of My Little Pony manes. When it came to selecting music videos with the allure and vibrancy of one of our favorite 1980s toys, we couldn’t help but “highlight” the hair of Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio in “Destination Unknown” and Cyndi Lauper in “True Colors.”
My Little Pony Week continues at Mirror80 as we celebrate these delightfully bright collectible toys manufactured by Hasbro since the 1980s. Originating as larger “My Pretty Ponies” in 1981, the MLPs took on the classic ’80s form and size we know and love beginning in 1983 and had a 10-year run in the US. After an attempt to revive the Ponies’ popularity in 1997, a global relaunch occurred in 2003, when they were reintroduced to kids and have been popular ever since!
There’s nothing better than when a favorite singer from your childhood is still going strong 30 years later! Enter Boy George, who has recently garnered praise for his collaboration with standout musician Mark Ronson.
