If you saw yesterday’s Retro Foodie post, you know how much we love to entertain! Next up: An ’80s-style Valentine’s Day dessert party. To prepare, we’re creating a series of mood boards to try and find a signature look for this event. Today it’s all about ’80s glamour–crystal, rose petals, and of course, strawberries and champagne…

Dreamy ’80s Glitz
I’m going to be honest: I’m an awards show junkie. I love nothing more than preparing a table full of party food and eating it over the course of four hours while watching the Oscars, or this coming weekend’s Golden Globes. In planning the table decor for next Sunday night, I gathered the images above to create a little mood board. There’s something of a fantasy element to all of this glitz, so this week we’ll be exploring the dreamy side of ’80s style. Today we start with all things shiny!
Happy New Year from Mirror80!
We wish you the Happiest of New Years…may 2013 bring you health, joy, fulfilled dreams, and a big dose of ’80s style at its best! Today we travel back in time to 1989 with this screen shot from When Harry Met Sally. And we also travel back to December of 2010, when Mirror80 was a few months old and we featured a blog post on “New Year’s Eve style” from this very film. Read it here! Don’t forget that the oh-so-inexpensive streamers and confetti you can buy at your local party store are the perfect way to add ’80s flair to a tray of champagne glasses!
’80s New Year Decor
Why is party decor so inherently ’80s?! We’ve explored this phenomenon in the realm of Halloween decorations, and now we’re on the cusp of the new year, once again blown away by the 1980s flair that oozes from mainstream party supply retailers. What’s at the root of this glittery revival?! The flash, the eye-catching aspect of festive occasions, a nostalgia that has entered the minds of product designers? Or perhaps ’80s design mimicked party pizzazz back in the day. Whatever the inspiration, how can you not love the results? Especially when everything is so darn affordable…
An ’80s Christmas Luncheon
You know those crazy ’80s parties steeped in nostalgia? Where everybody dresses up, drinks sunset-colored martinis and goes home with a Rubik’s cube or an arm full of plastic jewelry? We’ve hosted one of those! Today’s featured ’80s-themed gathering is a little different… I recently threw an ’80s Christmas luncheon for family to ring in the holidays. The focus: ’80s glamour and decadent food! In fact, in the 1980s, food was displayed in a “big” way! At the finest restaurants, each plate was a canvas that used tools such as ground pepper, chives, nuts and other “garnishes” to make a culinary statement. Read on for more ’80s foodie fun…
Friday Video Picks: Saturday Night Live Skits Showcase ’80s Design
So what are we looking at here?… It’s a skit from a mid-’80s episode of Saturday Night Live, a spoof of those bizarro 1980s Calvin Klein “Obsession” commercials that featured stark white interiors, models clad in black, and verse that was both obscure and meaningless at the same time. And the occasional slap in the face. In our first video pick, the SNL gang takes a stab at it with their commercial parody titled “Compulsion.” Watch it below:
Happy Halloween from Mirror80!
Happy Halloween, all you ’80s-lovers! How will you be spending your day and evening? Whether you celebrated this past weekend or the best is still to come, enjoy the images in today’s post. Friday Video Pick: “Something in My House” by Dead or Alive
For this special “Halloween Edition” of our Friday Video Pick series, we present a piece by British New Wave act Dead or Alive, fronted by the ever-energetic Pete Burns. “Something in My House” comes from the band’s third album. In fact, this track from 1987 has a dance-heavy sound with a bit of goth mixed in for good measure. And the video does not disappoint. From strobe light-style flashes that juxtapose Burns’ face with the head of a wolf to scenes of the singer walking through the forest in dramatic black outerwear, the visuals in this piece are the epitome of ’80s-style spooky.

A Very ’80s Halloween
Why is it that Halloween decorations and accessories always seem to channel the ’80s? Seriously?! This week I went to check the mail, and there it was–an Oriental Trading catalog. I used to teach, and like many educators of young children who need to order supplies in bulk, I made great use of Oriental Trading catalogs throughout my teaching career. And when you’re constantly flipping through pages of glow necklaces, glitter curtains and jelly bracelets, it becomes clear that some design elements of the 1980s will forever be associated with parties. Halloween parties are no exception…
