Happy New Year, Everyone! Before launching into the festivity of 2014 (there are some exciting things planned here at Mirror80), I wanted to take a minute and reflect on our favorite posts of 2013. Last year brought some delicious new developments, such as our Retro Foodie series, which explores creative ways to incorporate late ’70s-early ’90s design into your food and entertaining adventures. Another fun development: finally getting a new camera, which took our photo shoots up a notch. More fun to come in that department, but until then, here’s a look back at some of our favorite moments of the past year. Don’t forget to click on the links to view the full posts…

Our Favorite October Posts
It’s been an amazing October at Mirror80! We’ve reveled in the new fall season, cooked up two Retro Foodie photo shoots, and enjoyed a couple of DIY projects. Add a series on bargain shopping for retro finds and a tour of a very ’80s bathroom, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Today we take a look back at our favorite October moments. In case you missed anything or you want to take a second look…
’80s DIY: A Paper Strip Art Project
Hi Everyone! I’ve been excited to share this ’80s-style paper strip DIY project with you for awhile now…but first I had to finish it! Like many worthwhile projects, this one had many phases, and the best developments occurred when I hit some major roadblocks. But I’m finally done with the wall art, and now that the kinks are ironed out, I have a pretty easy set of steps for you to follow if you want to try creating one of your own. Read on for the details. If you’re a talker, the text will provide a detailed explanation. If you’re more of a visual learner, the pictures should be a big help…
The ’80s Connection: Skylar Strickland
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of striking up a correspondence with Skylar Strickland, an expert on the topic of 1980s design. His vast knowledge on the decade’s best interiors, decor trends and product design quickly became evident, especially when he gave me a glimpse of his extensive collection of design links, images and finds. While growing up in Florida, Skylar lived in a home filled with cutting-edge ’80s treasures. Meanwhile, many of us who were kids during that time grew up in locations where that detailed level of artful 1980s design was… well, let’s just say it wasn’t happening. What was it like being at the center of the decade’s design best? Let’s find out by talking with an expert who isn’t afraid to share his opinion…
’80s Interior Design by Jason D. Lesonic
When I first learned of Jason D. Lesonic’s ’80s-fabulous apartment, I was sure of two things: 1) Rarely does an interior so seamlessly blend authentic bold elements of 1980s style, and 2) I had to feature the apartment on Mirror80! Today we feature Mirror80’s first guest post, written by Jason D. Lesonic himself! Take it away, Jason…

An ’80s Southwestern House
There’s been a renewed interest in “ugly” ’80s houses. You know, homes that are on the market but haven’t been redecorated since our favorite decade… By the way, we at Mirror80 see these homes as museums! Today we explore the ugly duckling phenomenon in reference to ’80s design. Because we think some of these decorative flourishes are about to blossom into beautiful swans! Thanks to a Curbed article that spotlighted a four-bedroom Mediterranean-style home for sale in Tucson, Arizona, we have some amazing images to showcase. The home is for sale through Sotheby’s International Realty. I wonder if they’d ever auction off any of this fabulous furniture…
The Apartment of Interior Designer Rafael de Cárdenas
A month ago we featured the work of interior designer Rafael de Cárdenas of Architecture at Large. Not only does de Cárdenas delight in ’80s geometric motifs, he is an ardent proponent of color! You can imagine how delighted we were to stumble upon Sight Unseen and their in-depth tour of de Cárdenas’ New York apartment! Perhaps what we love most is the way the designer integrates the ’80s into his spaces while maintaining his own sense of style. Above we see a 1980s sculpture that de Cárdenas found at his grandmother’s house.
“Love Action (I Believe in Love)” by The Human League: Friday Video Pick
This music video from 1982 features a fictional wedding in which Human League vocalist Joanne Catherall weds her groom while lead singer Philip Oakey pines over her from the upper balcony. Yes, just like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate. Only this is a New Wave Dustin Hoffman with killer cheekbones and a beauty mark (which seems to be a requirement for band members, as mirrored by Catherall and her blonde counterpart Susan Ann Sulley).
A Noteworthy Memphis-Milano Collection
After last week’s post on the Memphis-Milano movement (aka Memphis Group), collector Dennis Zanone posted a link to the Flickr photos of his amazing Memphis pieces. In a display nothing short of museum quality, Zanone has showcased the best of Memphis-Milano design in a space that seems tailor-made to spotlight the features of the movement (note the flooring–pale wood, blue carpet and black and white checks, the perfect compliments to the bold colors and standout geometry of the furniture and objects).
