If you shop retro, you know how many amazing, vibrant pieces are out there, especially when it comes to ’80s and early ’90s clothing. And if you love the ’70s, the style possibilities expand all the more. Sometimes when you’re wearing an eye-catching dress or shirt, the last thing you want to do is layer on the geometric plastic jewelry. Not that it’s a problem if you do… But if you’re on the hunt for modern necklaces that can work well with a variety of retro clothing items, check out some simple yet striking options. I’ve purchased most of them within the last couple of years, but one is a true retro favorite!
Geo necklaces pair well with colorful tops and dresses. Got a fuchsia and purple striped knit tee from the ’80s? Add a geo necklace or two in silver and gold. Found a Memphis-style dress that’s filled with bold colors and patterns? More power to you if you have a large plastic or metal necklace from that same era. But if you don’t, a simple geo necklace will get the job done. Above we see a Mixed Metal Honeycomb Hexagon Necklace from Etsy shop Clementine. Remember it from this post?
I bought the gold- and silver-toned bar necklaces from Express. As you can see if you follow the link, the necklace is available in both silver and gold. Yes, both necklaces actually had attached metal collars, but I removed them so simple chain-and-pendant necklaces were all that remained. The chains are starting to show some wear and tear, but I’ve pretty much worn them every day since the summer, so that’s not a bad return on my investment! Did I mention that I purchased them during a “buy one/get one half off” sale?!
Rewind to the holiday season of 2014. I wanted to add a little bit of sparkle to my wardrobe, but my budget was almost non-existent when I factored in all of the holiday shopping I needed to do. So I found this crescent moon necklace at My Daily Styles. It was only $19.99. No, those aren’t real diamonds. But every time I wear this necklace, I get compliments. And it’s perfect for adding some sparkle to a retro velvet top. Or an ’80s prom dress!
Pair it with vintage rhinestone necklaces for layers of sparkle. Because who doesn’t love sparkle?!
Clear as Crystal
Today’s last featured necklace actually IS from the ’80s. I love the crystal facets. I love how it goes with everything. And I love how it’s dramatic yet subtle at the same time. I’m pretty sure this little gem has been in my jewelry box since I was a kid, but here’s the same pendant for sale on Etsy (with gold accents instead of silver).
What are your favorite necklaces to wear with clothes of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s?
